After a cathartic experience, whether it would be from a movie, concert, streamed series, book, or roleplaying game, I feel uplifted and inspired. My imagination continues on, either reliving a special moment, or imagining what would happen next.
An engaging story is sometimes hard to come by these days. I suppose if all stories made, told, or experienced, where engaging or cathartic, we would lose the wonder and unique quality we witness through contrast therefore searching for the next high. A song will have its ups and downs, as a story will have the calm before the storm. We will value a glass of water so much more after an hour's walk in the dessert.
When we play dice games we embrace the chance of our attempts failing or succeeding. The higher the odds, the more satisfying the success. The higher the risk, the greater the reward! To hear two pieces of plastic click against each other, in anticipation of what the dice will roll, becomes more exciting with more challenging situations.
That said, do we need to roll dice for everything in a game? Player: "I walk into the room" Game Moderator: "Roll to see how well you walk". Really? For something as simple as movement I have to make a roll? It will be a tedious roll and if its a standard 1d20 where their is a 5% chance that any number may be rolled, D-Percentile where it is a 1% chance that anything can be rolled? Factor in critical fails and successes, and a poor character could have something unfavourable happen to them all because they decided to walk. Now in a game where the Moderator isn't asking for a roll for every mundane action, but asks for a roll from the player when their character is simply walking in a room, the player realizes this is a special situation and their anticipation has them engaged on what it could be? I love to roll dice when I play roleplaying games. It leaves the odds in the hands of the dice and fate. I don't need to roll dice for everything.
